Knowing an account’s balance now is a different task from asking what its balance was at a particular old block. A node can be useful for current network activity without retaining every historical state needed for the second question.
In Ethereum, state includes information such as account balances and contract storage at a given point. An archive configuration retains historical state for queries that would otherwise require unavailable data or additional reconstruction.
Ask for the capability, not only the label
The Geth archive documentation describes different storage approaches and retention settings. It also distinguishes historical state access from historical proof support. A service described as an archive node should therefore be checked against the exact method and block range your application needs.
For example, an analysis may need a contract value at a block from several years ago. A successful request for the latest value does not test that requirement. Use a known historical case and verify both the requested block and returned result.
Record the network, block identifier, method and provider. A result from a different network or a request silently made against the latest block can look plausible while answering the wrong question.
Keep failure separate from zero
If a provider reports missing historical state or an unsupported method, do not convert the response into a zero balance. An unavailable answer is not evidence that the account held nothing.
Compare service limits, retention coverage and expected query volume before choosing infrastructure. Storage needs and client behaviour change, so avoid planning from an old headline disk-size figure. Consult documentation for the version and configuration actually being used.
Finally, preserve enough query metadata to reproduce important findings. Blockchain data may be public, but an analysis still depends on the source, method and interpretation. An archive service provides access to history; it does not automatically make every conclusion drawn from that history correct.
