A blockchain explorer shows a familiar token name, a convincing ticker and a transfer into your wallet. That combination does not establish who created the token or whether it belongs to the project you recognise.
On ERC-20 networks, names and symbols are descriptive metadata rather than globally exclusive identities. The ERC-20 specification defines these fields without providing a universal name-registration system. Another contract can use a familiar-looking label.
Keep three pieces of information together
Record the network, contract address and the source that identifies that address. The same text label can appear on different networks, and an address copied from a random social reply is not independently verified just because an explorer can open it.
Navigate to the project’s established official documentation through a route you already trust. Compare the full address for the correct network, not only the first and last few characters. If the project has migrated contracts, look for a dated explanation and the status of the old address.
An explorer’s verified-source-code indicator answers a narrower technical question. It does not guarantee that a token is genuine, that its code is safe or that anyone can sell it. Understand what the particular explorer’s badge means before treating it as an endorsement.
Receiving a token creates no obligation
An unsolicited transfer does not require you to visit a URL in its name, connect a wallet or sign a transaction. Treat instructions embedded in token metadata as untrusted. Reading a public explorer page should not require giving a stranger a seed phrase.
For a fictional example, two contracts both display the ticker ABC. The useful comparison is not which logo looks sharper. It is whether independent project documentation identifies either contract on the network you are using.
If identity remains uncertain, leave the asset alone while you investigate. This check helps establish what an entry refers to; it does not establish an investment’s suitability or future value.
